Meta Business Agent is Meta’s bet that the next customer service representative in your business will not be a person. It is an AI system that answers customer questions, recommends products and helps close sales inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, the apps your customers already open dozens of times a day.
Here are three things that happened in September 2026 that make this worth your attention.
WhatsApp launched a campaign spotlighting Nigerian small businesses that already use the agent. Meta bought a European AI start-up to strengthen it. Meta confirmed that, from 1 October, businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform will pay for messages that used to be free.
This article explains what Meta Business Agent does, what it costs, how the new charges work, and five decisions every SME should make now.
WHATSAPP BUSINESS MESSAGING IN NUMBERS

- 1 million+ businesses Meta says already use a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger (Meta)
- 1 billion+ active threads with businesses every day across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram (Meta)
- About ₦14 per chargeable service or utility message on the Business Platform from 1 October (Daily Trust)
- 30 September Meta’s deadline for Platform users to have a payment method on file (Meta, via Daily Trust)
What Is Meta Business Agent?
Meta announced the global availability of Meta Business Agent on 3 June 2026, at its Conversations event in London, after nearly two years of testing AI agents for customer support in markets such as India and Mexico. The agent can answer customer questions, recommend products and book appointments, and Meta says it can respond in customers’ local languages using a business’s own tone.
There are two ways to use it. Small businesses can set it up directly inside the WhatsApp Business app in a matter of minutes.
Larger organisations can use the Meta Business Agent Platform, which connects the agent to existing systems such as Shopify and Zendesk so that it can take actions on the business’s behalf rather than simply answering questions.
The pitch is simple: every business gets a sales assistant that never sleeps, working inside the app its customers already use.
Why Meta is investing so heavily
Messaging apps connect millions of businesses to their customers. In September 2026, Meta acquired Stilla.ai, a Stockholm-based AI start-up, whose team and technology Axios reported will contribute to Meta Business Agent.
The strategy is to turn WhatsApp from a chat app that businesses happen to use into software that runs part of the business.
Meta Business Agent in Nigeria: The Hustle Goes Automated
Nigeria is one of the markets where this matters most, because WhatsApp is already the default storefront for a huge number of small businesses. On 7 September, WhatsApp launched “Power your hustle with WhatsApp Business”, a three-week campaign following three Nigerian businesses: Edibles by Lera Ipapanu in Lagos, FHR Spices in Ibadan and Twinny’s Kitchen in Abuja.
The founders described how they use features such as the catalogue to display products and prices, and Lists to organise customers into new orders, follow-ups and pending deliveries. According to WhatsApp, all three also use Meta Business Agent to respond to enquiries, recommend products and assist with sales when the owners are busy. Meta’s head of communications for Sub-Saharan Africa framed the agent as AI working alongside business owners, rather than replacing them.
For a sole trader or a five-person team, the promise of Meta Business Agent is real. Missed messages are missed sales, and an agent that answers a price question at midnight can be the difference between an order and a customer who buys elsewhere.
The Cost Question: What Changes on 1 October
This is where many businesses are confused, so it is worth being precise. There are two different WhatsApp products for business, and the new charges affect them differently.
- The WhatsApp Business app: the free app most small businesses download and run from a phone. Reporting indicates the 1 October per-message charges do not apply to ordinary users, and Meta has said Business Agent will be included in some tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, though tier details have not been published.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform: formerly called the WhatsApp Business API, is used by banks, fintech, retailers and logistics firms to message customers at scale, usually through a Business Solution Provider. This is where the new charges land.
From 1 October 2026, service messages that were previously free and qualifying utility messages, such as payment confirmations and delivery updates, sent within the 24-hour customer service window will become chargeable on the Platform. For Nigerian businesses, Daily Trust reports a chargeable service or utility message will cost about $0.0101, roughly ₦14. Marketing messages cost more, at about $0.062 each.
Meta has also warned that businesses and solution providers without a payment method on file by 30 September 2026 will have their service messages blocked once charges begin. And those are Meta’s fees only. Solution providers may add their own charges on top.
For large-volume senders, ₦14 a message adds up quickly. For businesses weighing Meta Business Agent on the Platform, the lesson is to model the cost per conversation, not just the cost of the tool.
What About the UK?
Meta Business Agent is available to businesses of all sizes globally, so UK businesses can use the same tools. WhatsApp pricing is set by market, so the per-message figures differ, and UK firms handling customer data through an AI agent will need to consider their UK GDPR obligations in the same way Nigerian firms must consider the Nigeria Data Protection Act. For organisations serving customers in both countries, including Nigerian businesses selling to the diaspora, the design principles below apply equally.
5 Things to Do Before You Switch On Meta Business Agent
- Know which WhatsApp you are on. Confirm whether you are on the WhatsApp Business app or the Business Platform, and through which provider. If you are on the Platform, check today that a payment method is registered before the 30 September deadline.
- Audit your message volumes. Pull your last three months of message data and estimate what the same volume will cost under the new pricing. Identify messages you can consolidate, time better or move to cheaper channels.
- Feed it accurate information. Meta Business Agent is only as accurate as the information you give it. Before switching it on, update your catalogue, prices, delivery areas, opening hours and returns policy. Outdated information does not just confuse customers. An agent will repeat it confidently to every one of them.
- Set clear limits and a human handover. Decide in advance which conversations the agent must hand to a person: complaints, refunds, payment problems and anything involving a vulnerable customer. Check regularly that the handover actually happens.
- Be transparent and protect customer data. Tell customers when they are speaking to AI. Do not let the agent ask for passwords, Pines or card details, and review what customer information it stores. Transparent AI builds trust, and it also makes it harder for scammers to impersonate your business on the same channel.
BEFORE YOU GO LIVE: A 60-SECOND CHECK
- Is your catalogue complete, with current prices and stock?
- Have you written down which questions the agent must never answer on its own?
- Does every customer know how to reach a human?
- Do you know what each conversation will cost you from 1 October?
An Agent Is Only as Good as the Business Behind It
Meta Business Agent will not rescue a business with poor products, unclear prices or slow delivery. It can make a well-run business more responsive, at any hour, in the app its customers prefer. The businesses that benefit most will treat it like a new team member: properly trained, given clear boundaries, and checked regularly.
